No. We have not seen INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE yet. Trying to buy a new house, while raising three kids with no regular coverage, has kind of made going to the movies an impossibility.
We did see the SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, though. And before that, the last movie we saw in theaters was…
…DETECTIVE PIKACHU. In 2019.
Man. Kids.
So I just showed the twins this clip from the new Spider-Man movie, something to get them frothing for more when they’re a little older. I think the wife and I both agree they’re a little too young for this Spider-Man, but this scene with Gwen and 2099 and Spider-Woman stopping a helicopter from falling rules.
I think when the first SPIDER-VERSE movie came out, I was skeptical they would get the story of Miles Morales right, a character near and dear to my heart. So much so that when I was writing for a local Tucson news site, I dedicated an entire week’s article to how important he was. (It’s been lost to the Internet Aether and frankly probably most likely wasn’t even that well written. I was 22, after all.)
But they did. Mostly. The Miles character felt off, just slightly, from what I had known from the comics. It’s a gut thing. I see Roberty Downey as Tony Stark? Perfect. I see Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman? Excellent. But this film’s Miles was…not quite Miles.
But who knows? Maybe the team will knock it out of the park and the effects and animation will blind me to the story. How can I fault a movie that makes the Mexican-Irish Miguel O’Hara look so badass? He’s like a vampire panther on steroids except the steroids make him even cooler looking.
I don’t think it’s meant for me, though, and that’s perfectly okay. The time tested tradition of being a nerd and seeing the thing you love suddenly be curtailed to the generation behind you. How do I know this? Because watching that clip with the twins over, and over, and over, and over again let me know exactly who this Spider-Man movie is for.
Good.
