I don’t recall exactly what fantasy/science fiction story has someone whispering off-camera, “I can feel a change of the winds,” but you know, somewhere, in the back of your mind, you can picture it too. It’s a trope of the genre, something that indicates to the audience you should be prepared for a rapid shift of the status quo.

Jason Pargin said he didn’t understand the expression “letting out a breath you didn’t even know you were holding” until after the 2020 election/inauguration day. Then suddenly it all made sense.

I never understood the changing winds trope, but I do now. I don’t know what the next few months will bring, and I don’t know if after all is said and done that I’ll be the same person after this. Life is crazy. When all you want to do is put words on paper and have people read those words, the rest of the world can feel intimidating. A staunch landmark in your way, absorbing all the positive feelings you have.

You can’t let it win.

I’m aiming for a good summer. I hope you are, too.
