A few things as the boys sleep:

-I have gotten used to hospital showers. They are quick, painless if you move quickly, and quickly get you clean if you move quick.

Basically: Don’t dawdle and you’ll be fine.

-Any woman who gives birth is an unstoppable juggernaut of power and ferocity who should be feared and admired.

-There’s a clock in the room. It ticks loudly, making sure the whole room can hear it turning over the seconds. Maybe there’s a technical reason for it, like the nurses or doctors have to be sure we’re still latched in the space time continuum.

I don’t count the loud seconds.

I count the quiet breaths of my sons as they sleep.
